WHY DO MY EXHAUST NUTS KEEP LOOSENING AND FAILING THE GASKETS? While there are many answers, on turbocharged engines which can see EGTs over 900C, stud creep is almost always the problem. A normal grade 8 or 12.9 fastener is more than strong enough for the job until it sees temperatures high enough to destroy its hardness properties causing it to stretch or creep and subsequently fail the exhaust joints. Inconel 718 is used in extreme-temperature turbojet engines and is the best solution for turbocharger fasteners as well. These studs can withstand temperatures up to 982 C which is the same reason that the exhaust valves in most high-performance turbocharged engines are also made of Inconel. 718 Inconel studs include copper-clad prevailing torque nuts. Recommended torque 33-35 ft/lbs.
